First day of the workshop

The day I was looking forward to finally came. The school that we went to is called Sethansian School for the Deaf. When we drove into the school, I saw the students chatting outside and looking at the vans, wondering who we were. The high school kids from 3 different deaf institute gathered around in one room. We all introduced ourselves and broken up into 3 groups.

My team, the Kwaab Fan Crew was Antia, Anne and Anthony. Our workshop was about reaching your dreams and goals. We want to the students to be able to achieve their dreams of what they want in the future and not to feel like their deafness is keeping them to do what they want to do.

We started off introducing ourselves again and went on to our workshop. I described what dreams are and that there are 3 different kinds of dreams. Anthony describe the third dream which is the dream they want to achieve in the future. At first we did an ice breaker outside. A game called the Balloon game. Each student had a balloon, string and a message. In each balloon, there is a message and the only way to get that message is to pop the balloon. The students blew the balloon up and tied it onto one end of the string and tied the on end onto their ankles. The purpose is to pop the opponents balloon and protect yours from being popped. At first the students hesitated, but when one of the student popped a balloon, they all became comfortable and started playing. They were all laughing and seems to enjoy playing that game. After we played the game, we gathered inside and explained what their message means. The messages we wrote was "Don't give up", "You will succeed", "Follow your dreams", and "Good things will come to you if you are patient. "

After the balloon game, Anne went ahead with her activity which was the Dream Catcher. The students were ask to draw their goal or dream on a blue piece of paper since they were skilled at drawing. Then they had to draw 4 different steps of how to get their dreams. At first the students had a hard time understanding the activity. They got the idea after several examples and explanations. Some of those students drew beautifully. It was amazing.

After Anne's activity, it was snack time. I went outside to talk with the students. I got to know them more and was surprised that some of them are the same age or older than me. I realized no matter what age I am, I can still be a role model to students not only the younger ones, as well as those who are the same age or older.

In between activities, I noticed some of the students, those who were not involved in the workshop was looking through the window. It seems like they really want to join us.

We realized that time was running out so we went ahead to Antia's activity and skip the skit. Antia's activity was the Wish quilt. Each student received a foam paper. They put their hand print on the foam and decorated whatever they want. On the back they wrote 5 different dreams or wishes. The purpose was to write down what their dreams, wishes or desires are.

We ate lunch and interact with some of the students. I met more students, those who were not involve with the workshop. I started to really bond with those students. They seem to really look up to me.

Later, we had our 2nd workshop with the 2nd group of students. I started to become more confident since I learned from the first group. Some of the students in the first group taught me some Thai sign language so I was confident enough to use them with the 2nd group. That workshop went a little more smoothly since I already know what to expect.

The day of our first and second workshop ended. I was very exhausted. Some of us was too. But our day wasn't finished. We all rushed back to the hotel, got dressed up for dinner and a performance. We went to Siam Nirarat. It was a beautiful place. We went upstairs and there was a buffet. Some of us got to see a magic show. The magician was funny. He even surprised Adrienne with a huge diamond ring that could fit her whole hands. After dinner we watch a Thai performance. The performance was beautiful. I was in awe when I saw it. I was very tired, some of us slept during the performance. But I had to watch the whole thing. The costumes, the stage settings was amazing. After the show, some of the actors came outside for pictures, even elephants. I was a little scare of elephants since I had a bad experience by being chased by one when I was a little girl. I was a little afraid to be near them, but Anthony paid the guy to have the elephant pick me up by its trunk. It was scaring, but fun at the same time.

Before I entered the school, I was very nervous since I'm not skilled with sign language. I was also nervous to interact with those kids because I was afraid that I would not be able to understand them. Once I started the workshop, I was surprised at myself for using gestures instead of full ASL. I was told that the best way to communicate with the Thai students was by using gestures. My concern before arriving Thailand was knowing how to gesture because I was scared that they will not be able to understand me or the workshop. But I underestimate them. They were smart. They understood what we were trying to say about dreams and goals. The frustrated part was that some of them did not understand the workshop. It was really hard to try to get them to understand what we were trying to say. Also Thai sign language is very different from ASL so sometimes I had communication problems. I did not give up. I kept thinking to different ways to sign and gesture. It was very frustrating and I did finally got through them and help them to understand me. I learned how to be very patient and not to give up easily. Some of the students would try to communicate with me. Sometimes I would not understand them and sometimes they would give up and say never mind. But I told them no keep telling me what you are trying to say and I would finally understand after multiple repeats.

Floating market and the waterfall

We all woke up really early in the morning to go to the floating market. We were in the van for about an hour. When we arrived, we were not at the floating market yet. We had to take a speed boat to the markets. The guy who drove the boat was a wild driver. He went as fast as he could. The water was splashing around and some of us were getting wet. I felt like the boat was going to tip over as he swerved down the river. Adrienne seems like she was not enjoying the ride. The boat was going too fast for her and she was concerned about getting her purse wet so I offered to put my towel over her purse. It was fun when the boat was gliding across the river but at the same time, I wish he went slower so I could enjoy the view and relax. We arrived to the floating markets and the place was packed with locals and tourist. We took a klong (a boat with no motor) so we could shop. People were yelling out prices and asking us to buy things. We couldn't even move at all. The klongs were bumping into each other. It was awful, but I really did enjoy watching Alim buying food. Its almost like he wants to buy every single food that was offered at the floating markets. We all bought tons of fruits which was fresh, juicy and delicious.

After the floating market, we got back onto the van and drove for about 2 hours to the waterfall. It was a very long drive. It seems like it took forever. We finally arrived, but we had to hike up to the waterfalls. There were 7 layers of waterfalls. We all hiked up to try to reach the 7th layer, but it was closed when some of us got there. I was disappointed that we couldn't reach the 7th layer. The hike was very tiring, but it was a good work out. When we couldn't reach the 7th layer, we decided to go to the 4th layer and relax and swim. Some of us were scared to go in the water because the fish was huge and they complained that it kept bitting them. Really, the fish was sucking not biting. I didn't care so I jumped into the water and swam to the waterfalls. The feeling of the waterfall pouring down my back was one of the best feelings. I wish I could stay longer. One of the funniest moment was watching Alim swim. He swam like there was a shark behind him. We all laughed so hard. (Sorry Alim)

Very tired, we all went back to the van and most of us passed out. When we woke up, we were at a restaurant called Cabbage and Condoms. Strange name for a restaurant? There were condoms everywhere and instead of handing out mints after dinner, they handed out condoms. The money that the restaurant makes goes to hiv, aids, womens organization, etc.

The best part of that day was the waterfalls. I really did enjoy hiking and seeing the waterfalls. It was beautiful.

Sight seeing

I finally got some sleep at the hotel. Once I passed out I felt a rub on my back and it was Mia waking me up. I felt like I only got 5 minutes of sleep. I tried to get the shower working, but all I got was cold water and very little water was coming out of the shower head. I normally take a 10 minute shower, instead, I was in there for about 30 minutes.

I was the last person to go downstairs for breakfast. We ate breakfast. Fresh fruit and toast. During breakfast, my mind was dead. I couldn't even think straight. I believed at everything that Anthony, Katie and Greg was telling me even though they were just kidding.

After breakfast we got into a team for the Amazing Race, same concept as the tv show. For every destination we went, we had to find the answers for the question we were asked to find and do the task. We were asked to do a jump picture for every place we went. Also we were given 600 bahts to spend for transportation (tuk tuk, car taxi, motor taxi). The group that saves the most money and the group that went to most of the places gets a free drink from Alim.

Rachel, Katie and Mia were in my group. My group and the other group went to the grand palace first. It was a beautiful place. We took a while looking at the temples and Buddha. Being at the grand palace took us so much time that we only reached all except for one place which was Siam square. I had a lot of fun running all over bangkok. When we stopped in china town to eat, we were taken advantage of by not knowing that we had to pay 10 baht for refreshing tissues. We were also shocked that we had to pay 5 baht just to use the toilets. The day went by smooth, but tiring. We had to negotiate with the tuk tuk driver, walk from one place to another and try to figure out the answers to the questions. My favorite place so far would have to be the Wa Po where the largest laying Buddha was found. I was amazed of how big that buddha was. 15 meters high and 46 meters long.

After a long day of the amazing race, my group and the other group met at the Mango Tree restaurant where we had our dinner and Gro moments.

That night we went our separate ways. Me, Anthony, shabby and Alim went to the Patpong market to shop. I was looking for a backpack and for the first time that night, I had to negotiate with a guy who wanted 1300 bahts for the backpack. With Anthony's help, I got the backpack for only 350 bahts.

My day ended with a thai massage. Before that I did not want to get a message. Alim's eyes widen and screamed WHAT you don't want one? I asked why was the so surprising. He said that thailand is famous for their massage. Later he convinced me to get one and thank god he did because it was what I needed to end my very long day.

Thailand, finally!

We finally arrive to Bangkok, thailand. When we walked out of the plane, impatiently, I waited for everybody to get together. My first thought was I couldn't believe I'm actually here, I'm on the other side of the country. It seems so unreal to me since I've never been on the other side of the country.

As we went through customs and got our bags, we started to feel the heat. The heat really did hit us as soon as we walked outside. But we were not complaining because it's better than being back in rochester where it's 20 degrees outside.

Later, we arrived to Khao San road, where our hotel is. As we walked down that road, I was a little overwhelmed with the smell and that is something I would have to get use to it later. We arrived to the hotel, Mia who is my roommate and I went to our room. The room was nicer than I expected and the bathroom is a little strange. It's a bathroom and shower in one.

Even though it was 3 in the morning, I wanted to go out and explore Bangkok. Surprising everybody except for one wanted to get together and go out even though we had very little sleep.

We went to a restaurant and individually, we talked about what was our first thought when we arrived here. my first meal was a watermelon shake, pad thai noodles and spring roll which I shared it with Anthony. It was delicious.

We walked back to our hotel and there I passed out in a comfortable bed instead of those uncomfortable seats on the airplane.

More to come.

Thailand: Day One

Day one was exhausted. We all got together at around 7 in the morning with no sleep. Different thoughts were racing through my mind, hoping I didn't forget anything. All I wanted to crawl into my bed with my soft pillow and blanket and sleep. But with the fear of oversleeping and wanting to get use to the time over in Thailand, I decided to pull an all nighter. Some of the delegates did the same too. Even though I didn't show it, I was filled with lots of excitements and couldn't wait to get to Thailand.

We all got into the airport to check our bags in and went through security. As we all sat down and eat mcdonalds, my eyelid was getting heavy since I had no sleep. One thing I was not looking forward to was the 22 hour flight. It will be the longest flight I ever been on. Before we got onto our plane, we were asking each other where we are sitting. With disappointment, we were all seated separately.

I sat on the plane that went to ohaire, chicago airport. Since they are famous for delaying flights, I was hoping that our flight wasn't delay. Thank god it wasn't and it was on time. I finally got some sleep and I am sure the others did too.

After 2 hours, we arrived to ohaire. Some of us seemed to be more awake, so we got starbucks and chatted. Finally we got on the plane to Tokyo, Japan. Again, we all were seated separately, but some of us got to sit next to each other. I sat next to one of the delegate, Peter. Since I didn't know him well, I had the opportunity to get to know him. We chatted and play a card game called Speed.

I looked behind me when the others were siting and it looked like most of us had the opportunity to finally sleep. later, we all ate on the plane and the food was awful. I could not wait to get off and eat since I'm starving.

With little patient, I kept checking the map on the screen. The nice thing about the map was that it tells us where is plane is and how long will it be until we get to Japan. Right now I checked the map, it said we have about 35 minutes until we land. Once land, we will be boarding onto another plane and only 7 more hours until we get to Thailand.
